Melon is the fruit of the (Cucumis melo), and watermelon comes from the (Citrullius lanatus) tree, both originated in Africa. The melon was already cultivated in Egypt during the third millennium B.C., and watermelon can be traced back to the desert of Kalahari, also cultivated in the Nile area around 5,000 years ago.
